Description Of Tungsten Rhenium Wire

Tungsten rhenium wire is a high-performance alloy wire produced by adding rhenium to tungsten, typically with rhenium content ranging from 3% to 26%. The addition of rhenium significantly improves the ductility, high-temperature strength, and creep resistance of tungsten wire, while also increasing its recrystallization temperature. This makes tungsten rhenium wire an ideal material for demanding high-temperature applications where pure tungsten wire would become brittle or fail prematurely.

The most distinctive effect of rhenium addition is the improvement of tungsten’s ductility after high-temperature exposure. Pure tungsten wire tends to become brittle after recrystallization, limiting its reliability in thermal cycling applications. Tungsten rhenium wire, particularly with 25% or 26% rhenium content, maintains significantly better ductility even after extended high-temperature service, resulting in longer service life and reduced replacement frequency.

Tungsten rhenium wire is widely used in the aerospace field for high-temperature components and temperature measurement systems. In the electronics industry, it is used to manufacture electronic components and electrode materials. One of its key applications is as binding wire in sapphire crystal growth furnaces, where it provides reliable structural support and wire binding under extreme high-temperature conditions. Tungsten-rhenium thermocouples (Type C) are also widely used for temperature measurement up to 2320°C, offering excellent accuracy and stability in high-temperature vacuum and inert gas environments.

Tungsten-rhenium alloy is usually formed by a combination of powder metallurgy and subsequent thermo-mechanical processing, such as rotary forging and wire drawing, to achieve fine wire diameters while maintaining uniform chemical composition and mechanical properties.

Features Of Tungsten Rhenium Wire

Enhanced Ductility at High Temperatures: Unlike pure tungsten wire that becomes brittle after recrystallization, tungsten rhenium wire maintains excellent ductility even after extended high-temperature exposure. The addition of 25% rhenium provides the best balance of high-temperature strength and ductility.

Superior Creep Resistance: Tungsten rhenium wire exhibits significantly better creep resistance than pure tungsten wire at elevated temperatures, ensuring dimensional stability and reliable performance under sustained mechanical load.

Good Oxidation Resistance (under vacuum/inert gas): While tungsten oxidizes readily at high temperatures in air, tungsten rhenium wire performs excellently in vacuum and inert gas atmospheres, maintaining its integrity and performance.

Versatile Rhenium Content Options: Available in 3%, 5%, 25%, and 26% rhenium content to suit different application requirements and cost considerations.

Usage Precautions and Limitations Of Tungsten Rhenium Wire

Embrittlement After High-Temperature Exposure: While tungsten rhenium wire offers improved ductility compared to pure tungsten, it still undergoes some degree of recrystallization and embrittlement after extended high-temperature service. Once used, the wire should not be bent or mechanically stressed.

Compatibility Verification: Before integrating tungsten rhenium wire into your equipment, verify that the rhenium content, diameter, and surface condition meet your specific application requirements.

Handling and Storage: Tungsten rhenium wire should be handled with care to avoid surface contamination or mechanical damage. It should be stored in a dry, clean environment.

Thermocouple Calibration: When using tungsten rhenium wire for thermocouple applications, proper calibration against known temperature standards is essential to ensure measurement accuracy.
