Description Of Coating Tungsten Boat

Coating Tungsten Boat is a high-purity boat-shaped resistive heating element specifically designed for vacuum coating and thin-film deposition applications. It is manufactured from high-purity tungsten sheet (purity ≥99.95%) through precise stamping, bending, welding, riveting, or sintering processes. The boat features a distinctive boat-shaped structure with a central recessed trough designed to hold coating materials, while both ends extend outward as electrode connection zones for stable electrification and efficient heating.

In vacuum coating systems — which operate on the principle of physical vapor deposition (PVD) — the coating tungsten boat serves as both a container for the source material and a resistance heating element. When electric current passes through the boat, it generates heat through resistance (Joule heating), rapidly raising the temperature to melt and vaporize the metal materials placed in the recess. In a high-vacuum environment (typically 10⁻²–10⁻⁴ Pa), the vaporized particles travel in straight lines and deposit onto the substrate surface, forming a uniform, high-purity functional thin film. Typical coating materials include aluminum (Al), silver (Ag), gold (Au), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), and other low-to-medium melting point metals.

The exceptional performance of coating tungsten boats originates from tungsten's unique physical properties. Tungsten possesses the highest melting point among all metals at approximately 3,422°C, enabling tungsten boats to operate stably for extended periods above 1,800°C without significant softening or deformation. The high density (>19.1 g/cm³) and extremely low vapor pressure at elevated temperatures ensure minimal self-volatilization, effectively reducing the risk of thin-film contamination. The excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, combined with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, further enhances heating efficiency and structural integrity during thermal cycling.

How lt Works Of Coating Tungsten Boat

Coating tungsten boats operate on the principle of resistive (Joule) heating. When an electric current passes through the tungsten boat, the electrical resistance of the material converts electrical energy into thermal energy. Tungsten's high electrical resistivity (approximately 5.4 µΩ·cm at 20°C) enables efficient heat generation with relatively moderate current levels.

The boat is typically installed in the evaporation source area of the vacuum coating chamber, with both ends connected to water-cooled electrode feedthroughs. During operation, high current flows through the boat, causing it to rapidly reach operating temperatures typically ranging from 1,400°C to 1,800°C or higher. The coating material placed in the boat's recessed trough is heated by conduction and radiation from the hot tungsten boat. Once the coating material reaches its evaporation temperature, it vaporizes and the vapor flux travels through the vacuum chamber to deposit on the substrate.

Because the vacuum environment has extremely low gas molecule density, the vaporized atoms travel in straight lines with minimal collisions, ensuring that the deposited film is dense, pure, and uniform.

Applications Of Coating Tungsten Boat

Semiconductor and Electronics: Coating tungsten boats are widely used in semiconductor metallization processes for depositing conductive metal layers (Al, Ag, Au, Cu) onto semiconductor substrates. They are essential in LED chip electrode fabrication, thin-film transistor manufacturing, and integrated circuit electrode coating.

Optical Coating: Tungsten boats are employed in the production of optical thin films, including anti-reflective coatings for lenses and eyeglasses, reflective layers for mirrors, protective optical films, and precision optical coatings for laser components and specialized instruments.

OLED and Display Manufacturing: Tungsten boats are critical in OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) and display device electrode evaporation, where precise temperature control and film purity are essential.

Decorative Vacuum Coating: Tungsten boats are extensively used in decorative coating applications including gold plating, consumer electronics housings, mobile phone casings, automotive parts, Christmas decorations, bottle caps, toys, and various decorative items.
