It consists of a high-purity beryllium foil diffusion bonded to a CF (ConFlat) flange, providing a reliable vacuum seal while allowing high X-ray transmissivity. Beryllium is a lightweight, silver-grey metal with a density of 1.848 g/cm³, excellent X-ray transmissivity, and superior mechanical strength.
The diffusion bonding process creates a metallurgical bond between the beryllium foil and the flange, eliminating the need for adhesives or gaskets that could outgas or fail in UHV conditions.
