Description Of Bright Polished Ground Molybdenum Rod

Bright Polished Ground Molybdenum Rod is a high-purity refractory metal product manufactured from molybdenum powder through powder metallurgy, sintering, and subsequent thermo-mechanical processing such as forging, swaging, or rolling. The “Bright Polished Ground” designation indicates that the rod has undergone precision centerless grinding followed by bright polishing to achieve a smooth, mirror-like surface finish with very low surface roughness (Ra ≤0.2μm). The high purity level (Mo ≥ 99.95%, 3N5 grade) ensures minimal contamination in critical high-temperature and semiconductor applications. The material is also designated as Grade Mo1 per ASTM B387 and GB/T 4188-2017 standards.

Molybdenum possesses a unique combination of properties that make it indispensable in high-temperature industrial applications. With a melting point of 2610°C–2620°C, a density of 10.2 g/cm³, excellent thermal conductivity (~138 W/m·K), and a low coefficient of thermal expansion (5.1×10⁻⁶/K), bright polished molybdenum rods deliver reliable performance in the most demanding thermal environments. The bright polished surface further enhances performance by reducing friction, improving corrosion resistance, and ensuring clean, consistent electrical and thermal contact.

The manufacturing process begins with high-purity molybdenum powder (Mo ≥ 99.95%), which is pressed into bar blanks and sintered at high temperatures. The sintered bars are then processed through forging, swaging, or rolling to achieve the desired density and mechanical properties. Finally, the bars undergo precision centerless grinding followed by bright polishing (mechanical or electrolytic) to achieve the specified diameter, straightness, and mirror-like surface finish. The bright polished surface can achieve Ra ≤0.2μm, with even finer finishes available upon request.

Bright polished ground molybdenum rods are primarily used in semiconductor ion implantation components, vacuum furnace heating elements and support rods, glass melting electrodes, and medical equipment.

Features Of Bright Polished Ground Molybdenum Rod

High Purity (Mo ≥ 99.95%): Ensures minimal contamination in critical applications such as semiconductor manufacturing and medical equipment. Impurity limits are strictly controlled per ASTM B387.

Bright Polished Mirror-Like Surface: The rod is precision ground and bright polished to achieve a smooth surface with Ra ≤0.2μm. This reduces friction, improves corrosion resistance, and ensures clean, consistent electrical and thermal contact.

High Melting Point: With a melting point of 2610°C–2620°C, bright polished molybdenum rods maintain stability in extreme high-temperature environments without melting or deformation.

Excellent Thermal Conductivity: Thermal conductivity of approximately 138 W/m·K at 20°C enables efficient heat transfer, making molybdenum ideal for heating elements and heat dissipation applications.

Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: With a coefficient of thermal expansion of 5.1×10⁻⁶/K, polished molybdenum rods exhibit excellent dimensional stability under thermal cycling.

Good Electrical Conductivity: Molybdenum offers good electrical conductivity (resistivity ~5.7 µΩ·cm at 20°C), suitable for electrode and heating element applications.

High Strength at Elevated Temperatures: Molybdenum maintains good mechanical strength and creep resistance at high temperatures, ensuring structural integrity under sustained thermal loads.

Corrosion Resistance: Molybdenum resists corrosion from most chemical media including acids, alkalis, and salts, and offers excellent resistance to molten glass and many molten metals.

Good Machinability: Molybdenum can be machined using carbide tooling, and is easier to machine than tungsten, enabling precise dimensions and surface finishes.

Precautions Of Bright Polished Ground Molybdenum Rod

Machining Considerations: Molybdenum exhibits room-temperature brittleness and tends to chip during machining. Carbide tooling with sharp edges, adequate cooling, and appropriate cutting speeds are essential. Molybdenum is easier to machine than tungsten but requires careful handling.

Embrittlement After Use: Molybdenum can become brittle after high-temperature exposure due to recrystallization and grain growth. Used components should not be subjected to mechanical stress or reworked.

Handling and Storage: Bright polished molybdenum rods should be handled with care to avoid surface contamination or mechanical damage. Store in a dry, clean environment to prevent surface oxidation. Protect polished surfaces from scratches and impacts.

Surface Protection: The bright polished surface is susceptible to contamination and damage. Handle with clean gloves to avoid skin oils and salts. Protect surfaces with appropriate covers during storage and transport.
