Description Of High Purity Tantalum Sheet

High Purity Tantalum Sheet with 0.5mm thickness is a flat-rolled product manufactured from pure tantalum (UNS R05200) to ASTM B708 standard. Tantalum is a silver-grey refractory metal with a melting point of 2996°C, excellent corrosion resistance, and superior biocompatibility. These sheets are widely used in chemical processing equipment, electronics, capacitors, and medical implants.

Tantalum offers a unique combination of properties that make it ideal for demanding applications. With a melting point of 2996°C (the fourth-highest among all metals, after tungsten, rhenium, and osmium), tantalum sheets can withstand extreme temperatures. The material also offers outstanding corrosion resistance to acids, alkalis, and most chemical media, and it is biocompatible, making it suitable for medical implant applications.

0.5mm thick tantalum sheets are available in custom widths and lengths, with surface finishes including machined, polished, and annealed. Typical applications include corrosion-resistant linings for chemical processing equipment, tantalum capacitors, sputtering targets, and medical implants.

Applications Of High Purity Tantalum Sheet

  • Chemical Processing: Tantalum sheets are used as corrosion-resistant linings, gaskets, and barriers for handling hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and other aggressive chemicals.

  • Electronics and Capacitors: Tantalum sheets are used in the production of tantalum capacitors and electronic components, benefiting from tantalum's high dielectric constant.

  • Sputtering Targets: Tantalum sheets are used as sputtering targets for depositing tantalum and tantalum oxide thin films.

  • Medical Implants: Tantalum sheets are used in medical implants, surgical instruments, and radiopaque markers due to their biocompatibility.

  • Aerospace and Defense: Tantalum sheets are used in high-temperature structural components and electronic devices.

  • Nuclear Industry: Tantalum's high melting point and corrosion resistance make it suitable for nuclear applications.

  • Optical Coatings: Tantalum sheets are used as evaporation sources for optical coatings.

Precautions Of High Purity Tantalum Sheet

  • Hydrofluoric Acid Restriction: Tantalum is NOT resistant to hydrofluoric acid (HF) and will be rapidly attacked. Avoid contact with HF-containing media.

  • Atmosphere Requirements: Tantalum oxidizes at elevated temperatures in air. Use in vacuum or inert gas atmospheres for high-temperature applications to prevent contamination and embrittlement.

  • Handling and Storage: Handle with care to avoid surface contamination or mechanical damage. Store in a dry, clean environment.

  • Cleaning: Clean with a soft cloth or mild solvent. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the surface.

  • Welding Requirements: Tantalum must be welded in an inert gas atmosphere (argon) to prevent contamination.
